Open Composition Project
National Core Arts Standards: Creating (CR1.1.4b, CR2.1.4b, CR3.2.4a); Performing (PR4.2.4a, PR4.2.4b, PR5.1.4a, PR6.1.4a); Responding (RE9.1.4a)
Objectives:
Students will be able to write rhythmic patterns to create a composition with form (ex. ABAC) in 4/4 or 3/4 time.
Students will be able to create a melody for their rhythmic pattern in a chosen tonality (key).
Students will be able to perform their composition on an instrument of their choice.

Garageband Mini Project

Objectives:
Students will be able to use the Garageband app to select and add a drum and sound effect loop.
Students will be able to perform and record a melody on xylophone using the Garageband app.
Lesson Notes: This Garageband project supports the development and practice of Garageband loop and recording skills. This mini project gives students an opportunity to practice basic Garageband skills before moving on to more challenging skills during the Hip-Hop Composition Project.

Hip Hop History & Song Composition
National Core Arts Standard: Creating (CR2.1.4a, CR3.1.4a, CR3.2.4a), Responding (RE7.1.4a), Connecting (CN10)
Objectives:
Students will be able to understand the history and characteristics of Hip Hop music.
Students will be able to write Hip Hop lyrics that relate to their lives or interests.
Students will be able to compose a Hip Hop song using Garageband that includes a verse, chorus, rapping, and complimentary beats.
Lesson Notes: Students worked for 8-12 lessons on a Hip Hop unit that included composing their own hip-hop songs. ESL students were given provided with language supports for writing the lyrics.

Objectives:
Students will be able to create an arrangement of the song "Who Has Seen the Wind" using a steady beat, melody, singing, and ostinato pattern (rhythmic or melodic).
Students will be able to write and perform a 4 or 8 beat ostinato pattern to accompany "Who Has Seen the Wind"
Lesson Notes: Early in the year, students learn "Who Has Seen the Wind" and experience making an arrangement as a whole class. Later in the year, we revisit the song, and students are broken up into groups to create their own arrangements.

Objectives:
Students can perform music with many parts.
Students can perform rhythmic ostinato patterns on various instruments.
Students can perform for an audience using appropriate performance etiquette.
